“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” — Romans 12:10
A soldier is devoted to the country they love. They are devoted to the point that they’re willing to risk everything. Devotion to one’s country means also being devoted to the good of its people. God commands all of us to be selfless, but for American soldiers, their entire duty revolves around selflessness and love — even for people they don’t know. Who else died for people He didn’t know? Jesus, the Savior of the world. Soldiers shed their blood for our country. Jesus shed His blood for the world. Soldiers have made the second biggest sacrifice for our freedom, therefore, much respect is due.
“No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.” — 2 Timothy 2:4
Another sacrifice that soldiers make is their time and energy. They cannot be tied up in “civilian affairs” which means sharing the same concerns as the rest of the world. While St. Paul used this analogy to describe how Christians should not be distracted when in service to the Lord, it also rings true from a literal standpoint. Christian soldiers can only be obedient to their commanding officers and to God. And it is because of their dedication to the country’s worst problems that we can focus on our smaller ones.
“A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” — Ecclesiastes 3:8
As long as this world goes on, there will always be periods of war and peace. Until the end, we will always wish for a day that we no longer need soldiers, armies, defenses, and weapons. However, there will not be eternal peace on Earth until it is made new again and ruled by Christ Himself. In the meantime, the Christian soldier fights so we can have peace even when there is no peace from their viewpoint. We don’t have to hear the gunshots, the blasts, or the crying. Soldiers suffer in our place like Jesus did.
“Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me.” — Psalms 59:1
We could easily imagine this being a part of the soldier’s prayer. God’s protection is in favor of those who fight for good and He will deliver them from evil. Whether they return to their earthly homes or whether they are taken home to the Kingdom, God’s light is shining upon our American soldiers. He is their fortress against every enemy,
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Civilians love to paint soldiers as fearless, and while that may be true to some extent, we must remember that members of our military are human too. They feel afraid and they even feel discouraged. They spend years away from their families in an unfamiliar place, with unfamiliar people. They are forced to accept the worst of outcomes, and the reality that they may not return. God will comfort soldiers with His grace and peace. Soldiers may not always be fearless, but they are strong and courageous. They are filled with God’s strength and equipped to conquer their fears.
“He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” — 2 Samuel 22:35
God prepares soldiers both physically and spiritually. He arms them with strength that only He can provide. Any and every righteous battle belongs to God, and God promises victory in every battle fought. For us, those battles are spiritual more often than not. Soldiers deal with battles of all types: physical, mental, and spiritual. God’s hands are big enough to carry all those battles and conquer them.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13
True love in the eyes of a soldier is to lay down their lives — not only for their families back home, but for their brothers and sisters on the battlefield. Many amazing men and women have sacrificed themselves for their fellow soldiers. A soldier must always be ready for that possibility. Jesus came down to Earth to die for those near and far. Soldiers recognize how important the act of sacrifice is, and we should be eternally grateful for each and every one of them. God bless our military!
